On the Road Again…

In my last blog post, I talked about my travels to San Diego, where I had the opportunity to learn more about that community’s emergent interest in impact investing. Since then, I traveled to conferences in New Orleans and Denver, to engage with some of the most active foundations (Confluence Philanthropy) and angel investors (Investors Circle) in the impact investment industry. I believe I was the only person to attend both events, so I thought I’d share a few reflections.

Seeing the Light in San Diego

I had the honor of spending a few days down in San Diego last week, attending the San Diego Grantmakers annual conference, as well as a separate event focused on Philanthropy and Impact Investing. I learned a lot while I was down there, and came away inspired with a renewed vigor for my efforts to drive social and environmental benefit. At the same time, my interactions with foundation trustees, board members, and other asset owners illuminated a glaring blind spot in the way I commonly talk about our work here at CAPROCK.

Clean Energy R&D: An Appeal to Impact Investors in the Trump Era

The first full week of President Trump’s tenure exacerbated my fears for our environment. His administration immediately scrubbed any mention of climate change, as well as the Council on Environmental Quality, from the White House website. Additionally, it imposed a media blackout at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and temporarily suspended any new contract or grant. There have even been fears floated that climate change data gathered and stored by the government could be deleted during the Trump administration.

What I'd like to see from impact measurement in 2017

Over the past few weeks, I have read plenty of investor prognostications about what will occur this year. Since I don’t have a crystal ball, I thought I’d take a slightly different take and proffer a list of five developments I would like to see occur within the impact investment ecosystem. As our industry continues to “inch from niche to mainstream,” my fundamental assumption is that there will be an inexorable demand from the marketplace
for impact measurement rigor.
